Principles of Consulting

1. Don’t make work for your clients

If your client calls you, asking you to do some work, NEVER deny it: NEVER flip it back on him.

Q: Can you send me the file? A: I’ve already sent it to you! Why don’t you check your email.

What is the real problem here? Likely, the client (in this case, it’s me) is disorganised, or does not have easy access to the file. Clients generally follow the path of least resistence.

Sending the file over solves the immediate problem.

But the real solution is to make it easy for the client. If you transfer the work to your client, you will not have the opportunity to build lasting solutions.

2. A customer’s problems should be music to your ears

  • Clearly define and identify the correct problem.
  • And then solve that problem.
